GENERAL ASSEMBLY - DAY 5
Tuesday, July 6, 2010
“There are six things the Lord hates – no, seven things He detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord among the brethren.” [Proverbs 6:16-19]
When you read through the Proverbs – one a day – it takes a month. Keep repeating the effort over a few years and you start to see things each day that fit the reading in some interesting ways.
For instance, I have to confess that I do some things from time to time that God hates – no, He detests! I just about had it made today, though. I got through it without disturbing (too much) the first six. But, it was still early, in the committee room with that bunch of…never mind…I just confess that I was most likely sowing some discord among the brethren by the 10:00 am break. Actually, I told a joke poking fun at political correctness. (May I suggest here that jokes about pc in the midst of 712 Presbyterians are only going to bring on discord among the brethren?)
I apologized for sowing discord, and that brought about my penance. They invited me to lunch - two guys who own a vineyard in Napa Valley and a yoga instructor from a farm in Oregon (I am not kidding!). There we were, all sharing brie and toast and a $10 a quart bottle of water without a label on it; sitting on the patio in the sidewalk section of “Caio! Caio! Chow!” Now there's something that’s not going to happen in Madisonville!
I kept feeling a smile creep up on my face. At first, it was funny, then it was just fun – for a while. As Seals and Croft put it, “We may never pass this way again.” (true prophets, huh?)
Something else brought a smile today – that worship service I wrote about last night. God was there. I think He liked it as the children’s choir sang. I think He probably smiled to think He was in the same room with these little ones, a bunch of “pc PC’ers” (politically correct Presbyterian Churchers), and one old fool who can’t help sowing discord.
“Keep me aware, Lord, and flexible enough to bow and repent at the same time.” |
