GENERAL ASSEMBLY - DAY 3

Happy Birthday America... and me
“Pay attention, my child, to what I say. Listen carefully. Don’t lose sight of my words. Let them penetrate deep within your heart, for they bring life and radiant health to anyone who discovers their meaning.” [Proverbs 4:20-22]
Today’s opening worship service was phenomenal. I can’t help but think God was pleased. Huge choir, two praise bands, two dozen preachers, hymns, worship songs, communion, a baptism, dance, drama, and painting. Did I mention 7,000 worshipers in attendance? Way too much stuff and good highlights to suggest one part was any better than another. But, in keeping with my daily reading of Proverbs (Proverb 4 for July 4) the theme for today being “Pay attention”, let me point out how good God is:
Thousands of people there. Brianna and I were up pretty close to the front. We could see Momma, Daddy, and other loved ones hand the little child over to the good reverend. She took that baby in her arms, hugging, kissing her, baptizing her with her own tears of faith and joy even before they stepped up to the font. This preacher, I realized, knew this child. Then she spoke to the baby, almost whispering, as she cupped the water over her tiny head: “You pay attention, child. Listen close to me. These words are important. So important, you’ll be hearing them all your life. So let them penetrate deep into your very heart. Child, these are words of life to you…” Someday, she’ll say, “Wow! Thank you, Jesus!” (Just like I did today.)
Oh, yeah, I almost forgot to tell you all that our committees worked for four hours this afternoon, then we went out to Nicolette Island for a big picnic and fireworks. Good as all that was, I found myself wondering how Sunday at FPC went and how the family’s doing… |
