GENERAL ASSEMBLY - DAY 2

Saturday, July 3, 2010

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.  Seek His will in all you do, and He will direct your paths.”  [Proverbs 3:5-6]

We’ve done a lot (whole lot) of committee work.  Did you know that my committee assignment is “Form of Government – Revision”?  Some in the PC(USA) – maybe most – would remove much of our Book of Order and replace it with a new FOG (Form of Government) guideline for use in our churches.  Obviously, it is one of the more contentious and controversial items before GA 219 so I am really trying to pay attention here, listening for God’s discernment in the questions and responses we are hearing in committee…and praying, “Lord, you show me your path for us.”

Today we spent several hours listening to five pastors and one elder campaign for moderator of the denomination for the next two years.  Good folks, all concerned with where our church is to go in the days ahead.  Yet, somehow, they all had very unique paths and agendas for us to follow.  In the end, one was obviously elected – Cindy Bolbach (the elder) from the Virginia/D.C. area.  She has some good ideas, I believe, and she’s off target on other ideas, I believe.  Bottom line, God will use her (and us) if we align ourselves with Him…and if we are not aligned with Him, I pray He will certainly stop us (or demolish our human agendas).  So, I’m okay – as long as I remember God’s in charge whether we are obedient or not.  I just hope and pray His will happens through us – not in spite of us and that we can stay on His path.

* Side note:  My roommate here (Eric Nielson) was one of the six.  He’s a friend from a couple decades ago in seminary.  Turns out we don’t have lots in common, theologically, except Jesus.  Not having a lot in common with someon isn’t so terribly bad, depending on who it is we share in faith…
